What is custom software, and when do you need it?
Software shaped around your rules—when off-the-shelf tools start breaking the process.
Custom software is a system designed around how your business actually works: roles, approvals, field steps, pricing exceptions, multi-branch stock, and the reports you trust. Packaged tools solve common cases well; they struggle when your edge cases are the business.
Signals you may need custom work: the same data entered in three places, weekly Excel chaos, no clear owner of a task, customers asking “where is my job?” and nobody seeing the same status. The goal is not “owning software”—it is cutting repeat work and loss.
Not every company needs a platform on day one. A narrow first release (for example job tickets + status + notifications) often beats a giant multi-year build with unclear scope.
Rule of thumb: if ready-made tools carry the process without constant workarounds, stay there. If the process is fighting the tools, custom (or hybrid) belongs on the table.
